The texture of the surface provides the perfect cracks and crevices to display the endless unique outcomes of the obvara firing effect.

These pieces were actually only ever meant to be test works. Made as a part of my A-Level coursework, I was experimenting with my throwing abilities, texture, and non-Western firing techniques— thus none of these forms are turned or refined. I began exploring the effect of sodium silicate to encourage myself to throw wider. The sodium silicate solution is painted onto a cylindrical thrown vessel, dried to the touch using a heat-gun, and then the cylinder is pulled out into a bowl or vase form. As the clay body stretches, the sodium silicate outer layer cracks to accommodate creating these beautiful unpredictable cracking patterns.
